An update about the last month.

Well I'm going to try and remember some of the stuff that has happened over the past month. I started going through pictures and after figured I could update this blog. Okay where to start.

Well my friend Glenn and his wife Amy came up for a Bears game with some family members. So I joined them on Saturday to hang with them downtown. I remember that it wasn't a very warm day and since their train didn't get here till about 3:30 it was already past the warmest part of the day. I met them down at Union Station and we headed around downtown. Glenn is a good friend of mine from the Crispy's Days. He was my boss in fact when I worked there. Its cool that after all this time we still keep in touch. We'll hell Crispy's kind of became an extended family of mine. Made many friends from that place.

We'll it was a fun time and later that night we went to this blues club called...Blues. Chico Bank's was playing and Glenn really likes them. Their from Chicago and plus the cover was much cheaper than the other Blues club we went to. Over all it was a very fun night and great to have friends in town to hang with. I met up with them on Monday again and we had lunch at the Navy Pier but that day turned out to be a hellish day at work and well that was the day I left Teletech. Anyway.

The sunday before my last day at Teletech the girls below us had a BBQ and we went and met a lot of their friends and had good food. What was more fun when the sun went down we lit a fire in our backyard and had smores and just drank and talked. It was really really fun. Plus there was this really cute guy that lives down the street from us. I can't remember his name its been so long. But anyway he was really cool and I guess he's an accountant with a really buzzed haircut. Funny how it seems I go for that type of guy. The bald accountant type. e.g. Brad..lol.

Anywho. So after that night the whole Teletech thing happened and then i was pretty much not employed anymore. I've been working on my website and trying to get some freelance work while I'm looking for something more permanent. Its been going well but I just need to keep looking and find something soon.

Since then I've done some odd jobs. Like a focus group for Taco Bell with some new menu items. I started going to this networking group called Chicago Independent Artist Network that I'm really excited about. They are a group of artist, produces, independent film makers, video editors, you name it. And the whole focus of the group is helping everyone out, networking, passing out information about upcoming film festivals, jobs, etc. So every first and third Wednesday I go and I'm really excited about it. Very nice people there.

The a few weekends ago Gloria and Andy where here. Gloria used to work at PDC with me and Andy is her husband that used to be Norman's City Manager. Now they live in Bend, Oregon and were in town with some friends of theirs from Sweden. Guess their friend used to be the defense minster or something of Sweden and was getting an award. I'm not exactly sure but he was some sort of dignitary. But we got to hang out with G. Wish we had taken some pictures but didn't.

Then that is pretty much it. Not sure what is going on this weekend. I've been working on a project today and not that its after 5 I'm going to render a test run and call it a day. Oh and I go home in two weeks. Very excited about that. So keep looking sometime at the end of the month for pics about that.

Oh and my usually random Train pic. Later!

Lights Models Guestlist! j/k

Well for a few hours I got to experience being a model. I responded to an ad for models on craigslist just to see if I could get it. And well I did. It was for the National Restaurant Association and I'm not completely sure but it was for food safety, maybe for a txt book. Don't know really. But anyway it was at Kendell College. Matt's school in fact. I ended up getting let go because they didn't have enough time for that day (or so they said) and that I would get a call back for next week. I still got paid so I don't really care if I didn't get my picture taken and who knows if they really did mean they were going to call me back when they shoot again. But it was fun and I did meet this older lady who gave me some good leads.

There is this group called Chicago Independent Artist Network and they meet every Wednesday near where I live. And she said it was a great networking opportunity and a good way to kind of hear whats going on in the city. So after talking on the phone to a guy who owns the building (Its a company that rents out space and equipment for studios or film crews) I'm excited to meet new people and maybe get some work. If not at least get more involved. I've been in Chicago since June and feel like I still haven't scratched the surface or met anyone cool.

Well another update is that I don't work at Teletech anymore. Don't want to go into it but it was a good thing. I didn't really like it there and I felt that I was getting taken advantage of. But when the shit hit the fan I really knew that it wasn't the place for me. I'm not trying to get out of taking responsibility for my mistakes but when someone instead of helping you get better at your job just treats you like you are 3 years old and calls you stupid well...sorry I don't take shit like that.

Okay enough of that...Yesterday I went to a research study at UIC on alcohol. Yeah I know sounds like I'm just doing whatever to make money but it was fun. It was a study of how alcohol and emotions affect your judgment..etc. Anyway I was chosen for the non-alcohol part and instead of being served I just got cranberry juice and had to take these tests and had electrical sensors on my hand. It was really interesting to tell you the truth. And the poor girl. You could tell this was new for school or something cause she was so nervous. Not sure if it was because of me or just nerves. But I guess I could understand. Here you are just having people from an Ad come in and you and to like talk to them and study them etc. I think I look harmless enough? lol. Anyway because I was the non-alcohlic after two hours I was done. So it was the easiest cash in my pocket...oh and a lottery ticket..lol. Maybe I'll win the millions.

Well that's pretty much it right now. I'm still looking for work. I have enough money to cover rent for then next two months so it gives me time to really try and find a good job as well as pick up more freelance work.

Well that's it. Going to get more coffee and make a few phone calls. Later!

Awesome

Well it was a success. It was a long day and a half but I survived and enjoyed every minute of it. My body is in pain from all the hauling the 4 locations and the lack of sleep but I'm going to rest up and all will be well.

Anyway where to start. I got up Monday and headed to the first location at this pub that was really close to my house. It was cloudy and cool but I arrived early and got introduced to the producer and production manager Carolyn and Tim. The camera crew and riggers showed up and we got started on setup for the first scene. All of the filming for Monday were for the story of the video. So we had three locations Schuba's Tavern, Navy Pier, and this really cool lady's house. Anywho, I got settled in and started my PA duties. Yeah being a PA I figured would be a lot of just going on errans and stuff but it turned out I got to do a lot more. Yes I did go run errans like going to Walgreens to get shaving cream and a razor and to Kinkos to pick up some pictures for set decorations but still it was fun.Once I got back I had miss most of this locations filming but I did for a short while get to coordinate the talent and tell them when they were needed. It was nice when people would come up to me for answers or feel like I was really had a role. The talent was easy to get along with and listened to me. So it went really well.
Well pretty much they finished up and we had to pack up craft services...I think that's what its call...food and beverage....and helped load up the van to move to the Navy Pier.

It started to really cloud up and get colder by this point. The weather was not being nice at all. But we continued. I met with the extras and had them fill out the release forms. Had to answer questions by one kids mother. She was all about...how long is she have to be here? When does she get paid? blah blah blah I just BS'd her but it was fun being all important...to someone i guess. I didn't take a lot of pictures cause it was just hard cause it rained and all but most of the time I just went around getting things for people or relaying messages. It started to rain at one point and once we finished we loaded up the van and moved to the end of the pier. This I think was the end of the video where I guess the girl and guy switch places or something about that. The story I'm not completely sure of. Something about he is with a girl but longs for the one he lost. Yeah sappy. Anyway I had to do some heavy lifting at this point because they were going to shoot some green screen for a prom scene. It will be interesting once I see the finish product cause I'm sure Nathan (The lead singer) will be at this prom but really he was at the Navy pier inside surrounded by picnic tables and the crew. So by this time we let the extras go and started to pack up for the last location. It was at this lady's house and it was the part of the story where Nathan takes the girl home and like kisses her in front of the house after the prom. This is where I get to be in the video. Well not really but at this scene when you watch the video I'm inside the house right between the door and the window keeping people from getting in the shot. It will be interesting to see when it’s done and you can't see me but I'm there. lol.

Well really that is it for this day. It was midnight and they let me go and Tim took me home so I could get some rest because the next day we had a 5am call and it would take me about an hour to get to that location from my house.

It was a beautiful sight. We were on the roof of this apartment building and the sun was coming up. So freaking cold and windy too which was not fun. I'm surprised I didn't get sick after all this but it was amazing. Well we had to use this freight elevator to get everything up there and up some stairs so that sucked. I have bruises on my arm from all of it. Well we set up and the band showed up and at 7am the band started playing and that's when the complaints started coming in. I'm sure everyone who lived around there didn't like us because it was so loud. But they had the permits and those people just had to deal with it. During all this I didn't have to do much. Just watched everything going on and just chatted with the guy from the label and just generally tried to do some networking.

That first pic is Carolyn the Producer and Liz who was Makeup. Very cool girls. Carolyn lives in LA and Liz in San Diego and have worked with each other for a number of years. Wish I get a lead from them but who knows maybe when they come to Chicago again they will remember me. Anyway really that was all that took place that day. I got to leave at noon and went to work but then left early because I was so tired from lack of sleep. But overall it was well worth it and really energized me about what I want to be doing. So really hope soon I can get another gig. Well that's it for now. Chow!

Sorry delay on the post

There will be a post tomorrow about everything that is going on. Just been a bit behind and trying to catch up on stuff. Anyway just an FYI.

Well it has happened...

Well it happened. Got my call back and well going to be working on my first video shoot. The band is called Madina Lake and they are pretty big in Europe. But anyway I'm excited to be doing something for once fun and exciting and where i want to be. I really hope to meet cool people during the next few days and well hope my current job doesn't get to cock'd off that I'll be unfortunately unable to come in. I think they will be fine. Tomorrow is the only full day and Tuesday is suppose to be a half day with possible work on Wednesday. But if this helps me move forward I can only be happy. Well look for pictures from the set and I'll give updates tomorrow oh how it goes. Now if only the rain would stay away tomorrow but I doubt it. Well later! Wish me luck!

Wow, this was fast.

Well just a little update. Not sure if anything will pan out since I haven't heard anything more from the people. But I went to mandy.com Friday and as usual I look at jobs and just see what is going on. Most of the time I don't apply cause most jobs are located outside my public transportation bubble, but one add looked good. A music video shoot in downtown chicago. Well I just applied I think during work Friday and later that night I got a response. They want me for a PA position and its a three day shoot. So now I have to figure out what to do with my current job. It shouldn't be to bad. I might have to work the late shift or something to make up for not being there during the day. But still they are going to be wondering why or where I'm at. It really kind of makes me mad at them because I seriously doubt they think I'm just going to sit around and make dubs all my life. Well anywho.

Well the band is called Madina Lake and they are from Chicago. Kind of a mix between Simple Plan and The Rasmus. The are shooting a music video and as far as I know I'll be working tomorrow on the set. Tuesday is from sun up to noon so I wonder if we are going to be outside like sunrise or something. Anyway, that's my update so tomorrow could be a fun exciting day. Chow!

Friday, September 07, 2007

I know. Its been forever.

Okay so I haven't posted anything in a long time. I've been busy but also just lazy. Really not much has happened to talk about. Basically I get up, have my coffee or tea, get ready for work, ride the train which can be fun or very annoying, buy my coffee from the shop by the train stop and then walk to work, be more annoyed, leave work, go home, and wash, rinse, repeat. Basically that is it in a nut shell.

Okay where to start. Have to go look at my pictures and see where I've been. Well money has been a problem over the last month. Seems like i get paid then the next thing I've either spent to much or after bills and food and all the living expense I'm back to zero. Its not all that bad but it can go fast.

The job has been good. I've learned a lot but I really miss being creative. And I'm getting a little tired of everyone coming up to me with all their problems that really they should know how to do. Computer problems are the worst. I mean come on. The personal computer has been around for a long time now and people should know how to fix even the smallest problem but then I guess since I grew up in the start of the digital age I must take it for granted. To me its really simple and just basic troubleshooting but really sometimes I just wonder if they are just lazy and don't want to know how to fix it and just have someone else deal with it. Like this stupid video distribution system we have. I have no clue how it all works but somehow I'm suppose to be the master of it now. And I'm trying really trying to understand it and make it work but sometimes when something is broke its almost a waste of resources trying to fix it.

Okay enough bitching...for now. Lets see what else....well I got to encode these videos to Quicktime for Jennifer Garner personally downloaded of her PSA spot she did to stop Influenza. That was fun. To bad I didn't get to meet her or anything.

Me and Matt went down to the lake one day and took pictures. That was fun.

Just not much to talk about so I guess lets talk about the future.

Well I've really got the bug about freelancing. I've been talking to my friend Brian back home and seeing all the guys at work who freelance it really got me started to look at what I really want to do with my life. I want to be creative and do what I used to do back in Oklahoma. I'm not doing anything of that since I've been here. So I've started looking for more work and instead of thinking about it and not even trying to get the job I've emailed every lead. There is this band that needs someone to edit their music video. They don't have a lot of money but I applied and sent them my information and maybe I'll hear from them. That would be fun cause I loved doing that for the girls and their band. There was also this crew call for some indy film in October that I emailed the contact that could also be some fun. But that is basically what I've decided its about time to do. Its not going to fall in my lap. My job right now is okay and I like my coworkers and there are opportunities coming up that could be awesome but I feel like I'm stuck and someone else is deciding how far I go or something. I also feel like I'm not getting the most out of it in regards of pay. Not that money is everything but when I feel like they are leaning on me for so much more than what was in the job description and I'm not getting anything out of it. I mean come on. I'm 30 years old with over 7 years of experience and I swear I'm probably not making more than this just out of college no experience music major we have at work doing basically the same job as me.

Okay well that's my update for now. I know i should write more about my goings on then it wouldn't be so hard trying to remember stuff from a month ago. Okay well guess that's it for now. So I leave off with a favorite quote of mine.

"In the immortal words of The Doors, 'The time to hesitate is through.'

Sorry for the absence

I've been busy and well kind of just tired to sit in front of my computer lately. But maybe soon I'll have a post.

For Maggie (and pretty much anyone else who wants to know)

Well maggie has mention that she still didn't know what I did or who I worked for so well I'm going to post this for her and anyone else. Guess I haven't been very clear in my earlier posts.

Well anyway, I work for a Video Duplication company called TeleTech Video. This first pic is pretty much want I look at and use everyday. They primararly make master dubs for many clients like Sears, Discovery Channel (TLC), a ton of local stuff like car commercials (which I wish I was editing) and a lot of closed captioning for these religious groups for there sermon broadcasts on WJYS here in Chicago. They also upload Radio Commercials to pretty much any station in the US. Just depends on the client. They have 3 Avid rooms and 1 Final Cut studio but most of the people who use them are Freelance people who just come in to use the gear. There was a hint by one of my bosses that someday I would be editing and not just making dubs. Its really interesting and fun sometimes but like the last two days it gets hectic because stuff comes in around 10 and it all has to be done ASAP which can suck when there are two freelance guys wanting to use gear and just all the patching and repatching and stuff not working right. But over all its been pretty cool and I'm getting the hang of it.

Its all for broadcast too which is something I really need to learn again. All the timecode requirments, calibration, etc. This is great experience and I hope it leads to something more. I don't want to do this forever I want to go back to what I've done before and edit. But I get Avid experience for free so thats cool.

I'm getting paid okay. Its really only 100 dollars less than what I was making back home so that is cool. Could be worse. And its salary which is different. I'm used to being on a clock and having to sit there just to get hours when there is nothing to do. Here I could leave early if that ever happened. But it seems like thats rare. So far I haven't had to stay later than 6pm.

Getting to and from work is okay. Its a lot of walking and the train is hit or miss on how packed it is. So far I've only snag a seat 4 times and only had to wait for another train twice. So its new now but it will get old fast. And the winter...I'm not looking forward to that. I would rather sweat when its hot like it is than freeze to death walking the 6 some odd blocks to work.

I work right near the lake which is cool. I thought I took a picture of it today but I didn't so I'll have to do that tomorrow. Its fun at lunch just chilling and watching all the boats go by.

Okay this first picture is a google map to show you where i work. The location it marks is not right. The street is a little werid when you get around the Pier. I guess my company is on Ohio Street but its address is Lake Shore Drive. But right to the left of the big X there is a red dot and that is where I'm at. Also on the Chicago Picture the arrow points to where I'm at. I'm behind that big Black Condo Building but that's basiclly where I'm at. Yeah I'm right in the middle of downtown. Its really cool.

What else. Well this last picture is just what my walk looks like everyday. There is a Hot Dog place near here that I usually go eat at everyday when I have cash and I'll have to take a picture of that. They have the best corn dogs and while you wait they give you Italian Ice to snack on. Its so good.

Well that's it for now. Later!

Tuesday, July 03, 2007

Yeh, this one's for the workers who toil night and day.

Well its been a long few weeks but overall good. I started my new job. I've pretty much settled in to my new home and life is great.

I like my new job. Its a little hectic at times and just trying to learn everything but I'm picking it up pretty fast. Today I successfully added closed captioning and patched everything right myself. The patch bay is a mess and that is what keeps messing me up cause its not labeled clearly but today I think i pretty much have it down. Now I just have to learn a few more things and then I think I'll be fine. The guy I'm working with (Eric) is going on vacation in a few weeks so while he is going I'll be doing everything. That really scares me a little because I'm so new and if something comes up that I don't know how to do...well we'll find out I guess. I like everyone that works there and its really laid back. Which I so love. So as far as I know I'll still have a job after my month trial. I think the bossman likes me so that is good.

Well lets see. Matt and I went downtown one night to go see Brian Ferral who used to work at PDC when I was there. He works for FBLA and was down for their national conference the last two weeks so it was pretty much the only time we could see him. He's doing really good and looks great. Its amazing what happens to someone when they leave PDC. Its like there life just goes from being crap to wonderful...and that's putting it lightly. lol. But it was great to see him and we have a few drinks and just caught up. He lives in DC or just outside of it. But good to see him none the less.

Then we walked back to the train and well Downtown is so awesome at night. All the lights and it was a perfect night. Not to hot not to cold. I love summers here. But yeah wait till I start bitching about winter cause that is going to suck. I have to walk a ways from the train. Oh well I'll deal with that when it happens.

Well the rest of the week went by and the weekend came. Saturday was something Matt's friends called Spring Break 2007. I know its not spring but something they do I guess and we went to this outdoor bar which was huge and drank and the weather was sooooo freaking nice. Plus it was the first time I had been to the lake and it felt like I was at the beach. You don't even think you are just at a lake. Its so freaking cool. We took the bus down and then walking to the bar and well perfect day and lots o fun. I didn't get in the water so I have no idea if its cold or warm but I still have all summer and I'm sure to go again. Well I have to. I only live blocks away so there is no excuse. Oh and the hot covert boy pic. I wanted to take more but well didn't want to get caught.

So what next. Well Oh pride was the weekend before. But what to say. Just half naked boys on floats, lots of sangria and well yeah pretty much it. Here's a pic.

So anywho, well not much else to say. The next pic is pretty much what I see when going home from work oh and the taxi cab that just decided to run into the wall. It was funny cause I had my headphones on and was just walking and then all of a sudden all these police cars and ambulances came up and I was so confused cause I didn't know if I could cross the street or if I had to go back the way I came and go down a block. It was right near the red line entrance. But then I saw this guy run across the street so I just followed and took these pics.

So that is pretty much my update. I got to leave work early today for the holiday. Matt met me at my favorite place to eat right now. It has the best corn dogs I swear. Then we went shopping at Old Navy and then home. He's leaving for Peru tomorrow so I'm house/dog sitting for two weeks. Its going to suck but he said he can txt msg me when he's there so we'll be in contact but nice going to be home alone. Oh well such is life. Anyway well that's it. Everyone (which I guess is pretty much the girls) have a safe and happy 4th. BYE!

OMG SHOES!

So I have a new job. Its downtown and in the same field which makes me happy. I'll take pictures when I start on monday. Its right by the lake and I can take the train to get there which is awesome. Anyway more on that at a later time.

Well Matt finished school for this session and we have been celebrating like rock stars. One night we finished off a 12pk each and a little bit of run. And this is what happened. Matt shoved me which he doesn't remember so don't think I just fell like this. lol.
Yeah pretty much a self destructing night but oh so fun.

Yesterday we met up with a couple of Matt's friends at this Mediterranean restaurant. I wish I was hungry cause the menu was awesome but I didn't want to pay for a ton of food that I wouldn't eat. So i had this chicken and rice soup and a big Greek salad. It was yummy. But the best part were the 3 dollar martinis. I had 3 each different and it was yummie. Everyone else had entrees and it looked so good so I will have to go back when I can eat more. That's what I love about Chicago there are so many different places to eat and so far everything has been good. Love the variety.

After that we were going to meet a classmate of Matt's but we didn't want to go to the place she was at so we went to Sheffields but it started getting cold so went home to change and have some free beers. Then met up later with Jen at this really cool Irish Pub. They had a live local band and met a lot of people. It was a fun night and I didn't slap anyone of fall into a wall. I'll tell that story another day.

Anywho, that's about it. I'm just excited about starting work monday, pride is this weekend, and just going to have as much fun as I can. Oh and I found a new fav beer. Its a local brew called 312. Its really good and not to expensive. Well guess that's my update. So enjoy. BLAH!

Sun, Wind and Rain. That pretty much sums it up.

Well its been a bit so I figured i would do an update. Well a couple of weeks have passed and still no job but I've been meeting with people and just applying to any job right now. I have some good leads but I need a job soon so I either will start working at this clothing store called Ragstock or the Doggie Daycare which are both right by my house. It might not be much but its something for the time being. Matt is almost done with school for this part so after Tuesday he will be home more which will be fun. But anyway.

Well Friday my parents came to see me and to take the truck back to Oklahoma. Its nice that i don't have to worry about it anymore. Parking really sucks here and I didn't want to pay for a space when the whole time I've been here I drove it once and that was just probably 100 ft to a new spot. But the parents flew in Friday morning and I drove it to their hotel and we jumped on the train to get into the city. It was a fun day and my parents just loved it. I had a meeting with a recruiter that day so once we got downtown i left them in the park for a bit but then we got back took the train to my house so I could changed and showed them where i live. After that we went back downtown and went to the Navy Pier. My dad wanted to stop to rest cause by that point we probably had walked 5 miles or so in 2 hours. And we rested under this tree so he could take his shoes off. It was funny and I wish I took a picture but forgot. He was just in heaven. The wind was blowing he had his feet in the grass it was just really funny. So after that pier we went another million miles to Gino's to have Chicago Style Pizza. I like it a lot but my Dad thinks his deep dish pizza is better. I guess they are both good just depends on the style of crust. But anyway it was a good stop to get inside and rest up a bit before heading down to Millennium Park.

The day was good. A little hot but the wind was blowing and that helped. There were a lot of people out for a Friday. I guess I figured people were still at work but maybe not. Anyway, went down to the rose garden that my mom loved. It smelled so good. Almost got run over by a Segway tour. It was really funny cause it was about 10 people all on segways and they just swarmed around us. One guy said watch out. Where the baddest Chicago gang you'll ever meet. I was just like...uh you are a dork.

After that we went to see the fountain. Buckingham I think it is called. I saw it when it was under 4 ft of snow so it was cool to see it when there was water in it and not just this thing that you couldn't really see. Its huge that's all I have to say.

Well the day ended and we walked back to the Blue Line stop. We hugged and well I kind of cried. I love my parents and I'm so glad they could visit. We had a great day together and they made it back to Norman safe and sound Sunday. Hope they get to visit again soon.

Well not much else has happened. I've meet a few cool people. This once guy Todd who I met off myspace is really cool. We think so much alike and we just hit it off from the start. Not really looking to date him. I don't know the whole concept of dating right now just is weird. Its only been 3 years since me and brad broke up but I don't know. I feel like it would be a full time job and I don't know if I'm really ready to be dating again. I just want to have fun with cool people and if something naturally comes out of it great.

Well that's my update. Take it of leave it.

Chow!
